As many Star Trek fans already know- Star Trek 2 has been filming for a few weeks now. However, we know very little about the plot of the film, who the villain is, or even if there is a villain(more on that in a moment). Now unfortunately this is business as usual for JJ Abrams, a man so uptight about details leaking out about his movies that he must employ his own team of muscle men to keep things quiet.
Now, look I am fine with some aspects of a film being kept secret until the film's release. But to refuse to even confirm what type of role an actor cast will play is just ridiculous and paranoid. Case in point: Benedict Cumberbatch , of BBC Sherlock fame, was cast in the film. But when it was announced via the trades no one could confirm whether he was playing the villain. Many speculated that was the case, but no one had any proof that it was. Paramount and Bad Robot did nothing to help the issue by limiting their press release to state he had been cast and nothing more.
Seriously JJ, you can't even tell us that Mr Cumberbatch is playing the villain? How does that spoil the film I would ask? In fact, I would state that it would only help fuel further interest and speculation by fans like myself. There would be much debate of what villain Mr. Cumberbatch could be playing. This would only increase interest in the film in my opinion.
But no, if it is a JJ Abrams production the fans are getting next to nothing until he is good and ready to give it. More power to him I suppose. I just feel the level to which JJ goes is borderline obsessive. It is his film, I get it. But again I ask: what is the harm in telling us who these new actors are playing?
Mr. Abrams and his team often cite Batman Begins as one of the inspirations for their Star Trek film. I am certain they admire the way Christopher Nolan rebooted the Batman universe on film. But what is interesting is that if you look at the time before the The Dark Knight was released, Chris Nolan outright told the press who the actors cast were playing. We knew that Heath Ledger was playing the Joker long before we saw the first trailer. We knew that Aaron Eckhart was playing Harvey Dent/Two Face. Did knowing those pieces of information ruin the film for the fans and average moviegoer? No, not at all.
So Mr. Abrams consider this a humble request by a loyal Star Trek fan- relax! You can let up on your iron grip on your films alittle bit. No one will get hurt. The film will not be ruined. Just confirm there will be a villain and who is playing him. That is all we ask. Be reasonable with the fans and we will of course be reasonable back.
It is time for you to punch some small holes in that secret box you are protecting Mr. Abrams. For the fans and for yourself.
