The Depository of Geek: The Alamo Drafthouse does it again!

Alaaaaaamoooooooo!!!!!!

Well the folks at the Alamo Drafthouse have done it again.  I would urge you to click on the link here before reading any further.  Ok, read the link...good.

I have said time and again that theaters need to get wise and start getting into the nostalgia game.  They need to make theaters personal again and make the experience of going to a theater unique.  They also need to appeal to people's desire to see their favorite films on the big screen again, presented in a quality theater, with other fans like themselves.  Alamo Drafthouse understands this and have time and again demonstrated how much they do.

What a great gift they have given film fans by allowing them to see the summer films of 1982 on the 30th anniversary of their original release.  But not only are they re-releasing them, but they are doing so on the original weekends which they were released in 1982.  How fucking cool is that?  Seriously.   But that is not all.  In addition, they are also cutting together trailer reels to run before the films that will match closely the trailers that might have ran before the film in question back in 1982 at release.

It is just so impressive the lengths that The Alamo Drafthouse goes to make their screenings one of a kind and truly well executed, classy events that pay tribute to the films in question and the continued love their fans have for them.

Here is the screening list with dates:

May 11 - CONAN THE BARBARIAN
May 18 - THE ROAD WARRIOR
May 25 - ROCKY III
June 1 – POLTERGEIST
June 3 - STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN
June 8 - E.T.
June 22 - THE THING
TBA – BLADE RUNNER*
July 6 – TRON

Of course all screenings will be in Texas, where the majority of Alamo Drafthouse theaters are located, which sucks I must admit.

It would be so amazingly awesome to be there for the screenings of Star Trek II or The Thing, both huge movies from my childhood.  Damn you Alamo for being so far away from me here in the frozen north.

I will be taking donations to the site starting tomorrow for my trip to see Star Trek II.  Please make checks payable to.... ok, I kid.  No not really.  I want to go THAT bad.

Anyway to any of you who live in Texas or nearby, get your butts to these screenings.  Not only will you get the chance to see your favorite film on the big screen with a quality presentation, you will also be supporting the objective of this event.  You see for us film fans to have more events like this one they need to be profitable.  So get out there and support these screenings so we can have more of them.  With luck we can hopefully have screenings of this nature here in the frozen north as well.

Way to go Alamo...you are once again writing the book on how to successfully bring people back to the cinema.
