DC release schedule to 2020!

Today Warner Brothers decided to unveil their schedule for their DC related films all the way to 2020.  You read that right, 2020.  Here is what that looks like:

Untitled DC Film  - 08/05/16

Untitled DC Film  - 06/23/17

Untitled DC Film  - 11/17/17

Untitled DC Film  - 03/23/18

Untitled DC Film  - 07/27/18

Untitled DC Film  - 04/05/19

Untitled DC Film  - 06/14/19

Untitled DC Film  - 04/03/20

Untitled DC Film  - 06/19/20

I would say first off that the June 2017 date is most likely Justice League.   The rest of the dates are harder to figure out.  That has alot to do with WB not really tipping their hand on the characters and properties they are looking to adapt.  I would say Shazam is certainly one they will release.  A stand alone Wonder Woman film has to be one of those films as well.  The rest is kind of harder to guess.  Will they do another pass at Green Lantern?  Is a standalone Batman film in the mix?  What about Flash?

So at this point all we know is when WB will be releasing their DC films.  I do wish at this point we knew a bit more about the properties they are looking to adapt outside of Justice League.  I think their schedule announcement would have been so much better if they had included at least a few of the films they are releasing along with their dates.  I mean at this point they have to, at least, have figured out the other film they are releasing in 2016 besides Batman v Superman?  No such luck it seems.  We have dates and no idea what properties will fill them.  That will come in time I suppose.  But if WB wants to one-up Marvel, having more than just dates is one way to do it.

Speaking of Marvel, here is an updated release schedule that includes Marvel, Fox, and Sony, in addition to WB/DC, based on announcements made by each:

  Avengers: Age of Ultron 05/01/2015

Fantastic Four 06/19/2015

Ant-Man 07/17/2015

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice  03/25/2016

Captain America 3 05/06/2016

X-Men: Age of Apocalypse 05/27/2016

Untitled Marvel Film (probably Doctor Strange) 07/08/2016

Untitled DC Film  - 08/05/2016

The Sinister Six - 11/11/2016

Untitled Female Spiderverse Film - TBA 2017

The Wolverine 2 03/03/2017

Untitled Marvel Film - 05/05/2017

Untitled DC Film (probably Justice League) - 06/23/17

Fantastic Four 2 - 07/14/2017

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 07/28/2017

Untitled Marvel Film 11/03/2017

Untitled DC Film  - 11/17/2017

Amazing Spider-Man 3 - TBA 2018

Untitled DC Film  - 03/23/18

Untitled Marvel Film - 05/04/2018

Untitled Marvel Film - 07/6/2018

Untitled Fox Superhero Film - 07/13/2018

Untitled DC Film  - 07/27/2018

Untitled Marvel Film  - 11/02/2018

Untitled DC Film  - 04/05/2019

Untitled Marvel Film - 05/03/2019

Untitled DC Film  - 06/14/2019

Untitled DC Film  - 04/03/2020

Untitled DC Film  - 06/19/2020

When you look at that combined schedule, you can see we will be getting a superhero themed film every few months in the spring and summer over the next 6 years.  As a life long comic book reader and fan it is amazing to me to see the schedules of major studios so dominated with comic book films.  It is awesome in every way.  It is a great time to be a comic book geek without a doubt.  Pretty exciting times indeed.

Now we will see if WB can deliver and match the quality of Marvel's films to this point.  After having seen them, Marvel, pull off Guardians of the Galaxy in the most spectacular way this past weekend, I have little doubt they will fumble any of their future releases.  That puts alot of pressure on WB and DC to match them. I have faith they will honestly.  I have to as I want so much for a great shared DC cinematic universe.  I like Marvel fine, but DC was always the comic universe I went to as a kid.  It really has the best characters.

Releasing the schedule is a necessary step for WB and I am keenly interested to follow the further announcements to come from them regarding which properties they are moving forward with, who they will star, who will write them, and who will direct them.  It is such exciting times.  I can't wait to see what happens.
