Feast your eyes on Interstellar Trailer #2

Today saw the release of the second full length trailer for Christopher Nolan's film Interstellar.  Having seen this trailer four times now I can tell you that I think it is very well done.  It does what so few trailers do these days: it doesn't give away the entire story.  No, rather this trailer is very confident.  It shows just enough to create interest in the story of the film, while also leaving you wanting more.  I think playing out the father-daughter element of the story in this trailer was a wise move as it grounds things in something universally understandable and tangible, i.e. the emotional relationship between a father(or parent) and his/their children.

With that said, I am particularly interested in how the film plays out the environmental angle.  It would seem, based on this trailer, that there is limited resources in the world of the film and that things have deteriorated greatly on Earth, to the point where the planet can no longer be saved.  I like this idea quite a bit.  Nolan is using one of the great aspects of science fiction, that being the ability to show us a possible future for us if we keep on this path.  All great science fiction ponders where we are going as a species and attempts, using the trappings of the genre, to speculate on where we may be given where we are now.  This is something this film seems set to explore and it is worth exploring.

I will not open up an argument when it comes to climate change.  I believe it exists.  The evidence is there, the data is there.  Yet still many do not believe.  It is their choice certainly.  But if I am being honest I worry that by the time we all agree or most importantly those in power agree, it will be too late.  I wonder if Interstellar will address this failure on some level.  My bet is that it will.  Maybe with a line of dialogue and nothing more.  But I am sure this idea that we failed due to politics and greed will play out in some aspect of the film.

I have always been a fan of big films with equally big ideas.  2001 is a favorite of mine, as is Children of Men, and Nolan's Inception.  I like movies that are more than simply entertainment.  Movies that challenge your beliefs on a subject or the way you approach something.  The best films entertain while also challenging you as a viewer.  These films belong on an entirely different level from other films.  These type of films are something special and showcase the true potential of this medium.

It looks, based on this trailer, that Interstellar is aiming to be this type of film.  I certainly am hoping so as I believe Nolan to be an incredibly talented filmmaker, one of few unique voices out there right now.  I support any movie he makes with my dollars and my voice.  I am hoping for nothing but the best from this film and by the looks of things thus far we may be in for something great.
